14 April 2024: Portslade to Shoreham

16 April 2024

Participants: 2 (Dave and Jim)
Apologies for Absence: 3 (Angela D, Sikka & Nick)
Mileage: 18 miles

The ride started with a rather lovely shared-use path running from Shoreham Road to Hangleton Lane, then, after a bit of suburbia, the Dyke Railway Trail up to the top. I did notice a worrying difficulty in keeping up with Dave – was I really so out of practice? – until I realised that the thing on Dave’s bike that looked like a very substantial part of the frame, was in fact a battery! After that, we walked for a bit and enjoyed the view, including watching at least 30 paragliders who had taken to the air from the Devil’s Dyke hotel.

After saying hello to the emu, who was looking a bit dejected (can’t they find a companion for it which isn’t a chicken?) we stopped for a welcome break at the Wild Flour café and talked to a fellow-cyclist who had actually heard of the Clarion, but was a bit taken aback to find that Dave and I actually were the Clarion. Where were all the others?

On to Poynings, and a stop to admire a lovely floral display next to a shelter; then Fulking, dodging what seemed like miles of parked cars outside the Shepherd & Dog. The road from here to Edburton runs along the foot of the Downs, and as well as the amazing scenery, we were lucky enough to see two of the paragliders coming down to land in a field, mercifully breaking no limbs nor injuring any sheep.

To avoid the horrible A2037, we banked on a vague memory of a ride many years ago which would take us westwards to the old saltings field by the river. We didn’t actually see that, but did find a narrow path (which, as Dave pointed out, was actually labelled as a “path”, not a “footpath”, so we rode on it).

Emerging in Upper Beeding, we encountered a wonderful old steam traction engine making its way through the village. I noted that the pub where we often used to have lunch on rides, by the river, is actually no longer a pub. (Progress???)

The last section of the ride took us down the Downs Link, alongside the river, past the cement works and finally to the toll bridge. We discussed the memorial to the eleven people killed in the horrific air crash in 2015, and agreed that its purpose is not immediately obvious to those not “in the know”. Personally it often seems to me that the designers of such things exaggerate the obviousness of their work, which is a pity. (Couldn’t there have been an explanatory plaque?)

Finally, we discussed future rides. I cannot make April 28th, and Dave cannot make May 5th. But let’s try to keep up the momentum with some more ride ideas and people to lead them.

Over to you!

Jim.

Next ride: Sunday April 14th – Portslade to Shoreham

11 April 2024

From Portslade Station via cycle path through Greenleas via Hangleton to Devils Dyke Railway Path to Dyke Road. Dyke Road (alternative South Downs Way to Saddlescoombe) and either Wild Flour Cafe for coffee or Rushfields Garden Centre at Poynings Cross Roads. Poynings, Fulking, Edburton.

Alternative 1: Bridleway to Truleigh Hill, then either bridleway to Southwick or Youth Hostel Road to Mill Hill and Shoreham with a stop at YHA cafe;

Alternative 2: Bridleway to Upper Beeding; for those not wanting to go off road follow Henfield Road to Rising Sun roundabout at Upper Beeding. Lunch at Rising Sun or other places in Bramber. Downs Link to Shoreham and tea or coffee stop.

We leave Portslade Station at 10.00. If anybody wishes to join me please confirm with me (via Nick) by Friday April 12 otherwise I might set off earlier!

Dave.

(PS although there is engineering works on the West Coastway on April 14th, trains will be running from Brighton to Portslade. The 09:30 Littlehampton train looks like the best bet – Jim.)

News

11 April 2024

Hello all

These longer and milder spring days are perfect for fair weather cyclists, like myself, who really don’t like getting cold and wet when out cycling. Hopefully there will be plenty of cycling opportunities for all of us during the warmer months ahead.

The focus of this newsletter is mainly to remind everyone that Dave has a ride planned for this Sunday (April 14th) and also to circulate details of the National Clarion Annual Conference (April 25th). I also thought I would mention the Palestine solidarity ride some of us took part in last month.

March 16, 2024: Palestine solidarity Brighton ride w/ Gaza Sunbirds

The majority anti-war voice of people on the streets during the past few months has been an impressive response to the two main UK political parties, who have both actively supported Israel’s war crimes in Gaza. The Gaza Sunbirds cycle ride in Brighton on 16th March was a great initiative and an inspired alternative to the Palestine street demonstrations many of us have attended since last October.

There were about 100 cyclists taking part in the short 3-mile ride through the centre of Brighton. Plenty of chanting and favourable responses from pedestrians and passing motorists made this Palestine solidarity ride feel like a worthwhile event. If this dreadful conflict in Gaza continues, it would be good to take part in something similar again.

There were four Clarionistas on the ride (Sean, Sikka, Tessa & myself).

April 25, 2024: National Clarion Annual Conference

I’m intending to join the National Clarion Annual Conference via Zoom on Thursday 25th April. If anyone would like to attend, I can send the relevant Zoom link in an email.

I’m hoping this year’s conference is shorter than last year’s gathering, which dragged on for more than three hours! Click here for the agenda.

I think London Clarion’s motion to commemorate those Clarion cyclists who died in the Spanish Civil War with a regular cycle ride is worthy of support.

That’s all for now. Hopefully see some of you on a cycle ride soon.

News

12 March 2024

Hello all

Past rides

The combination of festive lurgy and torrential rain meant that the new year 2nd January ride to Carat’s Cafe was cancelled. I don’t recall this annual ride not happening before. Perhaps we can organise something similar during the Easter break?

Although Brighton & Hove Clarion has been inactive so far this year, I did take part in an excellent 32-mile circular ride from my hometown of Woking with London Clarion on 10th February. It was quite odd to have the post-ride social in Woking’s Wetherspoons. I was more familiar with the pub when it was a branch of Woolworths and hope I didn’t bore too many people with my tales of buying pop 45s from the Woolies record department in the late 1970s.

Future rides

The spring weather is almost with us. Any ideas for cycle rides during the warmer months? A return visit to the Knepp rewilding project might be good,

Any of the routes on the Brighton Clarion website could be repeated.

Hopefully see some of you on a cycle ride soon.

Julian Arkell

21 February 2024

Hello all

It was sad to hear of the passing of regular Clarion cyclist Julian Arkell recently. Angela, Jim and Corrine have prepared the obituary below. Tributes can also be read on the B&H Clarion Google Group.
A memorial ride for Julian will be organised soon.

Thanks

Nick

Julian Arkell, 1934-2023

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Julian Arkell in October 2023.

Julian joined the Clarion in 2013, shortly after his retirement, and took part in many rides, including several which he planned and led. He later became Membership Secretary and Treasurer of our Clarion section.

Julian’s extensive ornithological knowledge was always highly valued on rides. He was an active member of the local section of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and was also an authority on local churches. He was treasurer of the Jung Society in London, and was involved in many other organisations.

An obituary circulated by the RSPB included the following biographical information:

“Julian was born near Oxford in 1934 and educated at Kings College, Cambridge University, graduating with an MA (Hons) in Economics. This led to a career as a consultant working in the field of international trade and development, exploring ways of removing barriers to trade between countries. This career took him all around the world. In 1992 Julian was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.”

However, he was a humble man, and all most of us knew about his previous life was that he had been quite a “high-flyer”. He never boasted about the considerable achievements mentioned in the obituary.

Sadly Julian had a stroke in 2018 and was unable to ride with us after that; some members of the local Clarion group visited him during his recovery, but two years later came Covid and lockdown, and the visits came to an end.

Julian’s last Clarion ride was on 10 December 2017. You can read his report of it here.

Newsletter – December 21 2023

22 December 2023

Hello all

With tomorrow’s winter solstice (22nd December), followed by next week’s festive break, this is going to be the last newsletter of 2023.

Previous ride

Three of us attempted to ride to Shoreham’s Port Kitchen a couple of weeks ago. Heavy rain meant we only managed to make it to Shelter Hall, after starting our ride at Brighton’s Palace Pier. Although it was an excellent coffee break, the entire ride was less than a mile (certainly one of our shorter cycle routes!) Click here for Strava link. Perhaps we can programme a ride to Port Kitchen early next year?

Looks like we had great weather for the Carats ride earlier this year (see Flickr link). Rain has interrupted quite a few of our rides this year. Let’s hope the weather remains dry for the 2nd January, 2024 excursion.

Membership renewal

You should all have received a membership renewal reminder by email. The membership fee is £17 this year, which includes a £5 voluntary local membership fee to B&H Clarion. This will help pay for things like updating the website and publicising the club. Most of the membership fee (£12) goes to National Clarion.

BACS payment to: Brighton & Hove Clarion Cycling Club, Co-operative Bank plc.

Farewell to 2023

Former B&H Clarion sec Ian Bullock wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and will be joining us at Carats on Tuesday 2nd January.

That’s about it for 2023, then.

I must set the alarm to watch the winter solstice sun rising over Stonehenge on the English Heritage link below tomorrow morning….

Hopefully see some of you on a cycle ride soon.

Ride report – 10th December 2023

15 December 2023

Only three of us turned up on Sunday. We only cycled half a mile to the nearest coffee shop, due to heavy rain.

An intrepid expedition to Port Kitchen in Shoreham will have to be arranged another time.

The next ride will be to Carats on January 2nd.
